Classic Call Of Duty Zombies mode is back from the dead in Black Ops 7 says leak

Activision has shared new multiplayer details for Black Ops 7, but a new Call Of Duty leak alleges it’s also reviving the original Zombies mode.

Although it’s not been in every Call Of Duty game, the Zombies mode has frequently appeared across the series since its debut in 2008.

For most of that time it’s worked in the same general way but 2020’s Black Ops Cold War reworked certain mechanics and introduced an open world iteration, while 2021’s Call Of Duty: Vanguard ditched the round-based gameplay for objective-based progression.

Even after last year’s Black Ops 6 brought back round-based Zombies, the mode is still quite different to how it was originally. However, a new rumour claims this year’s Black Ops 7 will offer the best of both worlds, with modern and classic iterations of the mode.

Activision has already confirmed that Zombies will be included in Black Ops 7 when it launches on November 14, but regular Call Of Duty leaker TheGhostOfHope has shared alleged new information about it via X.

According to them, while there will be a standard Zombies mode (no doubt one that plays similar to the one in Black Ops 6), there will also be a classic Cursed option that takes the mode back to its roots.

This option removes all the more modern elements, like armour, loadouts, the minimap, and the exfiltration feature that lets you safely exit and end the match without needing to die.

It will also limit the number of perks you can have to just four, bring back the original point system (where points you earn from kills can be spent on acquiring new weapons), and even have its own weapon list separate from the standard mode.

This points to a much harsher and more challenging version of Zombies, since you start with nothing but a pistol and the match doesn’t end until you’re dead. Judging by reactions to TheGhostOfHope’s claims, though, this is exactly what a lot of fans want.

‘Huge W for Zombies. Never liked the new iteration of Zombies that had loadouts and exfil. World At War/Black Ops 1 Zombies was always the best,’ says one fan on Reddit.

Another is sceptical that this will be a true return to form, suspecting that the classic version will still retain a lot of modern elements, like the crafting table and killstreaks, though others have retorted that there’s nothing to suggest those won’t be omitted too.

Regardless, having two distinct versions of Zombies would be a smart move since it would please long-time fans who don’t care for its modern iteration without alienating all the people who do enjoy Zombies as it is now.

This rumour comes shortly after Activision laid out official details for Black Ops 7’s core multiplayer, confirming 18 maps will be available at launch: 16 for the 6v6 mode and two for the 20v20 Skirmish mode. Six of the 6v6 maps will be available in the Black Ops 7 beta.

When is the Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7 beta?

The Black Ops 7 beta is scheduled to run across two sessions in October. An early access beta exclusive to those who pre-order the game will begin on Thursday, October 2 at 6pm BST and run for 72 hours across the following weekend.

The beta will then open up for everyone on Sunday, October 5 at 6pm BST and run for another 72 hours, concluding on Wednesday, October 8.
