While Capcom has almost always developed its Resident Evil games in Japan, none of these titles feature a story set in the country. The series has, however, depicted events in America, Europe, Africa, and even Antarctica.
In a recent interview, producer Masato Kumazawa was asked about a hypothetical future installment that might take place on Japanese soil. He is open to the idea.
“I think a Japanese setting is an idea that has crossed the minds of all Japanese Resident Evil fans, and Iāve considered it myself. Since the development team is primarily based in Japan, I think every member has thought about it. Although Japan hasnāt appeared as a game setting yet, it might well make an appearance in the future.
We wonāt compromise on the seriesā fundamental elements, such as the characters and the events that unfold within it, and weāll continue to preserve whatās dear to it. However, if we keep releasing the same type of game over and over again, players will eventually get tired of it. Thatās why we want to take on new challenges in the future.”
Last year, Konami took a chance by setting the story of the latest entry in its survival horror franchise in Japan with Silent Hill f. It was a successful attempt, and one that might give Capcom some ideas.
