Capcom attributes its recent successes to its shift to a team-driven development model

Capcom is undoubtedly enjoying one of the best periods in its history. The Japanese company has been racking up one success after another and maintaining an impressive pace of new releases.

For Haruhiro Tsujimoto, the company’s president, the reasons for this success are clear. Indeed, he attributes part of the credit to the shift to a team-led development model rather than one led by a specific creator. This has allowed franchises like Resident Evil to endure over time despite Shinji Mikami’s departure.

“In the video game industry, when a title becomes a series, it often ends up relying heavily on a particular developer, becoming what you might call a single-developer-driven title. If that person doesn’t follow through, there’s no sequel. The future of the series then becomes tied to the ideas of a single creator.

We discussed the issue with the key figures behind each franchise and ultimately agreed to abandon this approach. We therefore opted for a complete overhaul of each title.

We didn’t mind even if sales dropped temporarily, and by adopting a team-based game development approach, Capcom underwent a radical transformation.”

Finally, this method would also facilitate the transfer of expertise to future generations, ensuring that each series maintains a high level of quality.
