Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 has AI-designed cards

Already heavily criticized for the quality of its coop campaign, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is back at the center of yet a new controversy. Many users have noticed that Activision used generative AI to design the game’s business cards.

Several cards appear to be adorned with Studio Ghibli’s graphic style, which is fairly easy to reproduce using specialized graphic design software. The Steam description of Black Ops 7 clearly states that AI was used. So this comes as no surprise.

“Our team uses generative AI tools to help develop some in game assets.”

Of course, fans don’t seem to like this practice, and the American publisher had to explain itself in a statement sent to XboxEra.

“Like so many around the world, we use a variety of digital tools, including AI tools, to empower and support our teams to create the best gaming experiences possible for our players.

Our creative process continues to be led by the talented individuals in our studios.”

While AI can enhance efficiency, it will be interesting to see if it can truly capture the essence of what makes a campaign engaging. Balancing technology with human input might be key to improving the overall experience.
