Bungie disappoints Sony with Destiny 2 once again

Could Sony’s teams end up regretting the acquisition of Bungie in 2022? That’s the question we might ask ourselves, given the extremely low return on investment for the Japanese manufacturer.

Lin Tao, CFO of Sony Group, said that “the level of sales and user engagement did not meet our expectations at the time of the acquisition of Bungie.” Destiny 2 is cited as responsible for the negative impact on the company’s profits in the second quarter of fiscal year 2025.

Sony also says it has recorded an “impairment loss against a portion of the assets at Bungie”.

“Regarding Destiny 2, partially due to the changes in the competitive environment, the level of sales and user engagement have not reached the expectations we had at the time of the acquisition of Bungie.

While we will continue to make improvements, we downwardly revised the business projection for the time being, and recorded an impairment loss against a portion of the assets at Bungie.”

That being said, Tao pointed out that PlayStation’s live service games contributed more than 40% of the revenue by games developed by the company’s studios. Helldivers 2 is one such game, with “great success” on Xbox and increased engagement on other platforms. MLB The Show 25 also did very well.
