Blue Fury brings back 16-bit helicopter combat action

Persons of a certain age will instantly get the warm fuzzies looking at Blue Fury, a new 16-bit-style helicopter game being created by a one-man development team, namely a chap called Tim Wheatley.

It actually reminds me a lot of the classic Amiga game Virus, but without the awful jet controls, but there were quite a few games that played similarly.

β€œEach mission drops you over a procedurally generated island – no two maps are the same,” says Tim. β€œYour objectives are straightforward, but execution is anything but. Destroy enemy tanks, neutralize ground forces and locate friendly soldiers stranded behind enemy lines. Get low, drop a rescue line, and bring them home. All while watching your fuel gauge, managing your ammunition, and keeping one eye on the missile launch countdown timer. When that missile launches, the mission is over.”

The helicopter is armed with a mini-gun as well as rockets but these are unguided so you will need to lock on to your targets manually. The maps feature different biomes and times of year, and there will be a 30-mission campaign along with quick-play options with randomised settings, such as the number of enemies, that you can tweak yourself.

Time for those ever-so-important Key Features!

  • Featuring Helicopter combat inspired by 16-bit classics
  • Procedurally generated island terrain across four biomes
  • Quick mission mode with randomized terrain and customizable enemy loadout
  • Thirty-mission campaign with authored briefings and fixed maps
  • Rescue mechanics with rope and climb animations

  • Enemy helicopters, tanks, AA launchers, gunboats, and jet interceptors
  • Minigun, rockets, and air-to-air missiles
  • Colorblind-friendly minimap option
  • Benchmark and demo mode
  • Scoring system with high score tracking

The game will be released later this month and you can head over to the Blue Fury Steam page for more information and to wishlist.

I completely agree! It’s interesting how the developers have managed to update the mechanics while keeping that classic charm. It makes me wonder how many new players will appreciate the 16-bit style alongside those of us who grew up with it.
