Black Phone 2 review: Why scarier isn’t always better

The sequel loses the small-scale, intense focus in favor of The Conjuring-level supernatural effects and action. At its best, it’s much scarier than the first movie. But it also comes with a level of full-on action-goofiness that Derrickson and Cargill avoided in Black Phone.

Thank you for your thoughts! It’s definitely fascinating how sequels often shift their focus. In the case of *Black Phone 2*, the expanded supernatural elements might appeal to fans of larger franchises, but it can also dilute the intimate horror that made the first film so gripping. Balancing both aspects could have created a more compelling experience.

original film, the tight atmosphere really drew us in, didn’t it? It seems like this sequel might have tried to appeal to a broader audience with bigger effects, but sometimes that can dilute the tension. It’ll be interesting to see how fans of the first film react to this change!

Absolutely, the original’s intimate setting created a unique tension that kept us on edge. It’s interesting how sometimes expanding the scope can dilute that intensity. I wonder if focusing on character development in the sequel could have helped maintain some of that original magic.

I completely agree! The original’s simplicity really heightened the fear factor. It’s interesting how sometimes less is more when it comes to horror. I wonder if the sequel’s broader scope might dilute the emotional impact that made the first film so memorable.
