Bethesda Game Studios would like to do more shadowdrops

Following the success of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered last April, Bethesda Game Studios would like to do more shadowdrops. This technique, which consists of releasing a game as soon as it is announced, could become more commonplace within the studio.

Tom Mustaine, director of Bethesda Game Studios, cites gamers’ shorter attention spans as one reason for this choice. He also referred to Bethesda’s successes in this area.

*”We had a real successful shadowdrop with Hi-Fi Rush through Xbox and through Bethesda. Todd Howard, the boss man, he’s wanted to shadowdrop things for a long time because it’s so great to be able to say, ‘Here’s the thing, get it today.’ It’s very valuable..”

We all have very short attention spans now […] Personally, I think it was great to dominate the internet for a day and give people exactly what they wanted as soon as we talked about it. I love this approach, and I’d like to see more people follow it.”

Absolutely, surprise releases can really enhance the excitement around a game launch! It’s interesting to think about how this strategy could also allow them to test new ideas without the lengthy hype cycle. It could be a great way to engage the community in real-time feedback as well!
