Battlefield 6 Devs Reveal Console-Exclusive Crossplay Mode, And Optimization

Battlefield 6 Reveals Class and Weapon System Changes

Battlefield 6 technical lead and combat designer talks about crossplay development and how they optimized the game for Xbox Series S.

In a recent interview, new details on the upcoming FPS game were revealed. Battlefield 6 technical lead Christian Buhl talks about crossplay development and how they optimized the game for Xbox Series S. The game’s combat designer Matthew Nickerson also joined the IGN interview, explaining how their crossplay mechanics would work, and is exclusive to consoles only. Both touched on two aspects that players were concerned with in the upcoming title.

Combat designer Nickerson confirmed crossplay will be a console-only feature. He explained that crossplay is a simple toggle that can be found in-game. Moreover, for preference input, if a console player is matchmaking, the lobby will provide preference to other console players “in a set time frame” and then fill up the rest of it, if required, with PC players.

Nickerson added that Battlefield 6 has crossplay on by default, and players need to turn it off manually. Once turned off, the console-only crossplay is enabled, allowing PlayStation players to play with Xbox players; however, PC players will not be part of the lobby. So, if you are playing with crossplay on consoles, console players will be given priority. If you have it off, then only PlayStation and Xbox players will be included in the lobby.

After optimizing Battlefield 6 to the Xbox Series S specs, the technical director stated the game is now “super solid” and “performant” on Xbox Series S and will run at a “smooth 60 frames per second.” “I will say that the biggest thing we did that was a challenge for us was [dealing with the console’s limited] memory,” said Buhl. “Xbox Series S does have less memory than even our mid-spec PC. And so there was a point…Oh, I want to say, like, 6 to 12 months ago where we kind of realized that a lot of our levels were crashing on Xbox Series S.”

According to the technical director, Battlefield 6 is now “super solid” and “performant” on Xbox Series S and will run at a “smooth 60 frames per second.” EA recently published details of the Battlefield 6 maps and modes that will be included, plus challenges that players will be able to complete to unlock rewards when the full game is released on October 10. Our preview by Kurston Timothy noted that “from quality-of-life improvements to the class system to the new and exciting maps, Battlefield 6 is shaping up to be one of the best FPS releases of the year.”
