The next Nintendo Direct has been confirmed to take place this week on Friday 12th September at 2PM UK time (3PM CEST / 10AM EDT / 8AM PDT), and it’s going to be a big one with around one hour of news.
The news initially exclusively through the Nintendo Today app at this moment, and there’s minimal details outside of the date and time. Typically we are given information of the length of time and some kind of indication on the scope of the Direct, whether the focus will be on a particular system, first or third parties, or indies, but the walled garden of information presented within Nintendo Today doesn’t have this.
More information has since emerged with Nintendo explaining that there would be “roughly 60 minutes of information on upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch games.”
This is longer than usual, but could be a sign that Nintendo are looking to make the most of the Super Mario Bros. 40th anniversary that is Saturday. Will we see a return of Super Mario Bros. 35, but with four extra players? Who knows, but I’d put money on Super Mario Sunshine joining the GameCube line up of games on Switch Online. For new game announcements, that’s a bit trickier. The team that has made the last few 3D Mario platformers has just launched Donkey Kong Bananza, while Super Mario Wonder is just two years old.
But away from Mario, there’s obviously plenty for Nintendo to talk about for the Switch 2 in particular. We’ll hopefully get a release date for Metroid Prime 4 this time, which is still set for launch in 2025, and is a significant first party project for both the length of its development and the fact that it’s coming to both Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. Then there’s Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, which is due late 2025 or early 2026, and more news on Splatoon Raiders would be great.
Of course, we expect some new game announcements and surprises along the way as well.
