An AI-generated image was included in Anno 117: Pax Romana by mistake

Gamers are becoming increasingly aware of the addition of elements created using generative artificial intelligence in video games. Now it’s Anno 117: Pax Romana‘s turn to be singled out for using these tools.

On Reddit, a user noticed a background image of questionable quality. It appeared to have been designed using AI… and Ubisoft confirmed this information. However, this visual should never have been used in the final game and slipped through the publisher’s verification process.

“This image was a placeholder asset that unintentionally slipped through our review process. The final image is attached here and will replace the current version of this artwork with the upcoming 1.3 patch.

With Anno 117: Pax Romana being our most ambitious Anno yet, we’ve assembled the largest team of artists ever for the franchise and to help meet the project’s unique scope, they use AI tools for iterations, prototyping, and exploration. Every element players will experience in the final game reflects the team’s craft, artistry, and creative vision.”

Below, you can find the AI-generated visual on the left and the final image on the right.
