Announced in 2023, the MMORPG set in the The Lord of the Rings universe had already gone through a rough patch. Last October, a former Amazon Games employee explained in a LinkedIn post that the project had finally been scrapped. However, the American giant had never confirmed the information.
That has now been done via a statement by Jeff Grattis, Amazon’s head of games, to the website Eurogamer. While the company continues its work on the saga within its gaming division, this massively multiplayer title is no longer in the works.
“Our creative team continues to explore a compelling new game experience that does justice to Tolkien’s world; we are working closely with Middle-earth and remain excited about the IP.”
This MMO based on The Lord of the Rings was in pre-production at the time of the announcement of layoffs within its teams in 2025.
