A former PlayStation executive speaks on exclusives

Although the war over exclusives has calmed down in recent years, it remains a recurring theme in the video game industry. The days when games were only released on PlayStation or Xbox seem to be over. Only Nintendo is resisting this trend toward openness.

Shawn Layden, an iconic figure at Sony Interactive Entertainment, where he headed the US division from April 2014 to September 2019, has spoken out on this issue. With more than 30 years of experience at the Japanese brand, Layden has a wealth of expertise in all aspects of the gaming industry.

In an interview, he stated that while not all games are meant to be exclusives, they remain essential to differentiate giants such as Sony and Nintendo.

“I don’t think all games need to be console exclusives. I don’t think all games should be, but I do recognize that when you have giants like Sony and Nintendo—and Microsoft wanting to see Xbox everywhere—it’s crucial for the brand to have strong exclusives. Imagine if Mario landed on PlayStation. It would be the end of the world! It would be like cats and dogs living together. And it’s the same for Nathan Drake and Uncharted. I think they give the platform its meaning.”
