Wargaming Group’s latest free game is not going down so well, with only a 32% positive sentiment coming from players.
You may recognise the name Wargaming Group from games like World of Warships, Order of War, and Hybrid Wars.
Basically, if it has “war” in the title, there’s a good chance it’s probably made by the same company.
The publisher has now released its latest title, World of Tanks: Heat, and it doesn’t seem to be going down so well with fans despite it being a free game.
Similar to previous World of Tanks games, Heat is essentially a hero shooter where the heroes are tanks instead of people.
Think Overwatch or Valorant, but with big tanks duking it out on the battlefield.
Sounds cool, right? Sure, it’s a great idea on paper, but fans of the series have not been as easily impressed when they managed to get their hand on the game.
As for why the game is being received so poorly, it partly might have to do with the AI-generated content that Wargaming Group declared on the store page.
The disclaimer reads as follows:
“Generative AI is used solely during development for supplemental, non-essential purposes, including design ideation, code production support, or localization assistance. These AI-generated outputs are limited in scope, reviewed by our development team, and never substitute human creative or technical decision-making. All final core assets and game content are created by Wargaming’s artists and developers.”
AI-generated content in video games has seen a rather big pushback since its inception, with many gamers labelling games that use such tactics “slop”.
Reviews For World Of Tanks: Heat Are Very Negative
Looking at the reviews, the problems seem to go further than this though.
“I played this through all the tests.. Closed Alpha, Closed Beta’s, etc… Every single step was a step backwards, with devs that are so disconnected with the testers, they actually gaslight them if they disagree,” reads one Steam review for World of Tanks: Heat.
“This game is unfinished and somehow has less content than the first ever Project CW alpha. There used to be a lot more tanks and more variety, and the gameplay was genuinely interesting. It was slower and more progressive, you had time to enjoy a match. Now on full release theres less tanks, only like 3 of them are even viable to play and you can’t even pick what gamemode you wanna play,” another review reads.
“I thought the game would have some meaningful progression. It’s like BF6 in WoT. Everything is designed so you don’t have to think much and can just spam game after game, doing action without any deep thought. I tried a game against AI, and it was boring as hell,” reads a third review.
It seems that Wargaming has a big fight ahead if it wants to turn World of Tanks: Heat into a success. As of right now, the game has around 3,856 players according to SteamDB, not incredible numbers but nothing too small either.
