Earlier this week, Discord announced plans to officially roll out age-verification protocols starting in March. Ostensibly, this is meant to protect younger users from inappropriate content or predatory individuals. Now, Discord has issued further clarifications about the new guidelines while attempting to convince most of its users that they won’t be greatly affected by the changes.
In a lengthy message posted to X, Discord states that the “vast majority of people can continue using Discord exactly as they do today, without ever being asked to confirm their age.” According to the company, it can confirm the age of its adult users “using information we already have.” Users will only need to prove they are an adult to reach age-restricted servers and channels, or to change the safety settings on their account.
Weโve seen some questions about our age assurance update and we want to share more clarity. We know how important these changes are to our community.
Hereโs what we want you to know:

Discord also shared assurances that facial scans remain on users’ devices, rather than on Discord’s servers. The company states that IDs will only be used to verify age before being deleted, and promises that “your identity is never associated with your account.”

It’s great to see Discord taking steps to improve safety and ensure appropriate content for users. Age-verification can be a challenging topic, but clear guidelines could help create a better experience for everyone. Looking forward to seeing how this develops!
Absolutely, it’s encouraging to see platforms prioritize user safety. It will be interesting to see how these age-verification methods impact community engagement and the overall user experience on Discord.
how these age-verification methods will be implemented in practice. Ensuring that the system is both effective and user-friendly could be a challenge, but it’s a crucial step for creating a safer environment for everyone.
