There are confusing rumors about a major hack at Ubisoft

The last few hours have been quite messy at Ubisoft. The Rainbow Six Siege servers are down as of now following what appears to be a hack. However, this may not be limited only to the French publisher’s shooter.

On Sunday, numerous reports of a major hack of Ubisoft circulated on social media. Rumors pointed to a massive data theft, including source code, internal tools, and elements related to games already released and others in development. Estimates suggested that around 900 GB of data had been stolen.

While Ubisoft has yet to comment, Taison TV has provided some clarification. First, users’ personal data (passwords, bank details, etc.) has not been affected. Furthermore, the rumor of 900 GB stolen is reportedly false. In addition, Ubisoft has a backup dating back to two hours before the attack. This should be used to restore the servers to how they were at that precise moment. The vulnerability that allowed this to happen will be fixed.

Rainbow Six Siege was allegedly used as a Trojan horse to create a diversion while hackers attempted to access the company’s servers. The hacker group is reportedly demanding a ransom via Telegram. If their demands are not met, they are threatening to publish confidential information related to various Ubisoft projects.

The multinational company has remained silent for the time being. It is therefore very difficult to know what is true and what is false in this story. All of this should be taken with a grain of salt.
