Xbox could abandon paid multiplayer with its next console

Whether on PlayStation, Xbox, or even Switch, gamers are now accustomed to paying a subscription fee to access online multiplayer. The first of its kind in this area, Microsoft might decide to abandon this model.

According to Windows Central journalist Jez Corden, the American manufacturer will no longer charge users for access to the online features of games on the next Xbox. This decision is reportedly due to the fact that the console will be very similar to a PC. Since Steam and the Epic Games Store will be compatible, gamers will be able to easily bypass Xbox’s paid multiplayer service either way.

In the same article, Corden states that the new Xbox will resemble a traditional console. It will also be able to run Xbox Series X|S games and those from previous generations included in the backward compatibility program.
