90% of gamers have played a remake in the last 12 months

This new study was conducted by MTM, a consulting firm specializing in strategy and knowledge, and was published on September 15. The report explores “the sentiment, tension, and economic impact of remakes and remastered video games on the market.”

A total of 1,500 console/PC gamers were surveyed in the United States and the United Kingdom (750 in each territory). We learn that 90% of those surveyed have played a remake or remaster in the last 12 months. More interestingly, 85% of this group admitted to having played the new version without ever having played the original game.

Add to that the fact that 76% of participants said they found remakes and remasters “appealing”. MTM believes that the craze for this type of game will continue into 2026, but that studios will have to strike a delicate balance between nostalgia and creativity.

Commercially, in games and other media, nostalgia is a trend that is likely to continue through 2026 and beyond. But gamers understand that remakes and remasters can come at the expense of creativity and that they risk missing out on new stories and experiences.”
