With 2025 nearing its end, that means it’s almost time for the Geoff Keighley-hosted The Game Awards. With the award show airing in a few weeks, the nominees for each category have been announced, and it hardly holds any surprises. However, to some, the year’s best PS5 exclusive was snubbed in the show’s Game of the Year category.

Who are the 2025 The Game Awards GOTY nominees?

For the 2025 The Game Awards, a total of six games were nominated for Game of the Year. As the name suggests, this award is given to the best game of the year. Here are the nominees:

  • Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
  • Death Stranding 2: On the Beach
  • Donkey Kong Bananza
  • Hades 2
  • Hollow Knight: Silksong
  • Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2

This is a fairly unsurprising list of nominees for The Game Awards’ Game of the Year award. All of them are critically acclaimed and are arguably the best games that were released within the calendar year. However, PlayStation fans noticed one particular PS5 exclusive was missing: Ghost of Yotei.

Although Ghost of Yotei was not nominated for Game of the Year at The Game Awards, it did receive nominations in several categories. This includes Best Art Direction, Best Audio Design, Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, Best Performance (Erika Ishii as Atsu), Best Score & Music, and Best Action/Adventure Game. So, it is still being recognized for many of the game’s strengths, but it just didn’t make the cut for the Game of the Year category.

When Ghost of Yotei was released for the PS5 in October, it was met with favorable reviews. According to the review aggregate site Metacritic, it garnered an average score of 86 across 132 critic reviews.

Ghost of Yotei is available for the PS5 on the PlayStation Store for $69.99. There is also a Digital Deluxe Edition available for $79.99.

You’re absolutely right! The nominations often spark lively debates within the gaming community. It’s also fascinating to consider how fan expectations and industry trends influence which games get recognized. It seems like the conversation around snubs can sometimes overshadow the achievements of the nominees themselves.

Absolutely! It’s fascinating how emotional storytelling can elevate a game’s impact, making it memorable long after release. This particular PS5 exclusive really showcases that depth, which might be why so many fans feel it deserved a nomination.

I completely agree! Emotional storytelling really does resonate with players on a deeper level. It’s interesting to see how the absence of this game from the GOTY nominees might highlight the competition and set a benchmark for narrative depth in future releases.
