Nintendo has announced the release date for the new Yoshi adventure, with Yoshi and the Mysterious Book set to launch for Nintendo Switch 2 on 21st May.
A new gameplay reveal trailer accompanied the announcement, giving much more detail about how the game will play, beyond simply being another side-scrolling Yoshi platformer.
The story sees the Yoshi tribe met with a mysterious book knows as Mr. E. Instead of being an insane marriage counsellor, Mr. E is more of an encyclopaedia of creatures… though you won’t actually know the name of the creatures found within Mr. E’s pages to start with.
Jumping into the book to meet a strange bubble-blowing creature, trying to eat the creature gives Yoshi the horrendous taste of eating soap. Jumping into the creature’s bubbles, however lets you float in them for a few seconds. Having the creature on Yoshi’s back lets you create strings of bubbles when running around. Combine that together, and you can jump from bubble to bubble as they rise into the sky, reaching higher ledges. The creature also changes colour if they eat fruits – larger bubbles with an apple, heart shaped bubbles when turning them pink.
It’s all framed as a research expedition, and once you’ve wrapped up the stage, you can cook up your own name, or take Mr. E’s suggestion: Glubbit.
AS you gain more stars, you can reach new chapters and new creatures.
It’s all presented in a rather lovely stop motion style, once again finding a new way to make Yoshi’s games look thoroughly distinctive to the rest of Nintendo’s games.
Yoshi’s last adventure was in Yoshi’s Crafted World, for which I said in our review, “Yoshi’s Crafted World is simply lovely. The arts and crafts style is used in so many quirky little ways, the soundtrack lodges itself in your brain, and there’s the same kind of laid back family friendly collectathon platforming that the series is now known for. Its one real new trick is its art style, sure, but that doesn’t make it any less charming and wholesome.”
