Sony has revealed the release date of Marvel’s Wolverine on PS5, as it tries not to get too close to GTA 6 during the busy Christmas gift-giving season.
The complaints about Sony’s conduct during this generation are not just to do with its lack of first party game releases but also its general lack of communication and engagement with fans. Although the last State of Play showcase was a good one, the last several before that were not.
Sony also has an increasing habit of making major announcements via anodyne blog posts on its official website. Today though, they couldn’t even be bothered to do that and revealed the release date of Marvel’s Wolverine via a simple post on X and Bluesky.
‘Who’s ready for September 15, 2026?’ is all it says, along with a plea to wishlist the game on the PlayStation Store. And execs wonder why people miss the razzamatazz of E3.
The lack of fanfare is especially surprising given that Wolverine’s release date has been a subject of much speculation, since Sony has insisted that it is not moving it in order to get out of the way of GTA 6 on November 19.
As could’ve been predicted, Sony wasn’t silly enough to take Rockstar on head-on and have instead opted for a minimum safe distance.

Two months either side of GTA 6 is probably what most other publishers will stick to too, although those with yearly franchises have some very difficult decisions ahead.
EA Sports FC 27 is probably okay, as the last game came out on September 26, but it’s going to be very interesting to see what Activision does about Call Of Dut this year, especially as it’s chasing almost exactly the same audience as GTA 6.
Call Of Duty games typically launch in either late October or early November, so the question is whether Activision moves out of that window or chooses to take on Rockstar head-to-head.
As for Marvel’s Wolverine, relatively little has been shown of it so far but while it’s by Spider-Man developer Insomniac Games it’s considerably more gory than any of their previous titles.
It otherwise seems to play pretty much as you’d imagine and will likely be just as big a hit as Spider-Man 2, although hopefully not as expensive for Sony to make, or they may struggle to make a profit from it.
Wolverine was not featured in the most recent State of Play, with Sony indicating that it would get a new preview later in the year, probably as a dedicated showcase.
For the first time in a while, Sony has two big first party titles out this year, with Returnal follow-up Saros due out on April 30.
That was featured in the most recent State of Play so it’s not clear whether it’ll get its own dedicated showcase or not, before release. Either way, Sony’s unlikely to do much in the way of promotion for Wolverine until Saros has launched.
