According to KeplerL2, a reputable insider, Valve is targeting 2028 for the release of the Steam Deck 2, unless new memory shortages complicate those plans.
After all, Valve’s Steam Deck released back in 2022 and hasn’t seen any new models aside from the OLED one in 2023, so it’s only natural that consumers are wondering when a new model will arrive.
On the other hand, a delay for the Steam Deck 2 could ultimately be advantageous. Unlike the PlayStation 6 or Project Helix (a future Xbox console), Valve’s model isn’t based on a semi-custom SoC. This means that Sony or Microsoft design a fixed, custom chip fairly early on: once defined, it changes very little before release. Valve, on the other hand, uses components closer to the standard market and remains free to integrate newer or more powerful chips if the release is delayed.

This is an exciting development for fans of the Steam Deck! It’s always interesting to see how technology evolves, and I’m sure many will be looking forward to what Valve has in store for us by 2028.
