Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, announced on X that he has been in contact with Mike Prinke and his family to handle the life insurance claim.
“Epic is in contact with the family and will solve the insurance for them. There is high confidentiality around medical information and it was not a factor in this layoff decision. Sorry to everyone for not recognizing this terribly painful situation and handling it in advance.”

We know the layoffs at Epic Games this week have done a great deal of harm to the industry as a whole. But more than just a number, these are hundreds of workers whose lives have been turned upside down.
On social media, Jenni Griffin shared the devastating impact this restructuring has had on her marriage. Her husband Mike, who is in the terminal stages of brain cancer, was laid off by Epic. As a result of his dismissal, Mike has lost not only his job but also his life insurance. He is unable to obtain new coverage since his condition is considered a “pre-existing condition”.
Jenni Griffin explains that she now has to “wonder what kind of funeral” she will be able to afford for her husband. She also fears she will no longer be able to provide for herself and her son.
“As I face the reality of losing my husband, I also have to wonder what kind of funeral I’ll be able to afford, how I’ll keep a roof over our heads, how I’ll protect our son and the life we’ve built together, and what will become of our dogs.
I sincerely believe that if the people who made this decision fully understood its human impact, they would not have wanted this outcome.
Mike isn’t just a number. He’s a father. A husband. A deeply loved person.”
She hopes her message will reach “the right people” so that a viable solution can be found.

This post touches on a very sensitive and important issue. It’s always heartbreaking to hear about someone facing such difficult circumstances, especially after giving so much to a company. Wishing strength and support to those affected.
I completely agree; it’s a deeply troubling situation. It’s worth noting how companies’ policies regarding employee support can significantly impact individuals facing such challenges. This case highlights the need for more compassionate practices in the workplace.
