This week, the website Game File reports that Ubisoft had decided to cancel an Assassin’s Creed game this summer. This entry was set during the reconstruction period following the American Civil War from 1860 to 1870.
According to rumors, players would have taken on the role of a black man who was once a slave in the South before heading west to start a new life. Five Ubisoft employees provided more information during an interview with Game File.
“Recruited by the Assassins of the series, he would return to the South to fight for justice in a conflict that would see him, among other things, confront the emergence of the Ku Klux Klan.”
Three of these employees said that the publisher had chosen to cancel the project due to the negative reception of the character Yasuke in Assassin’s Creed Shadows. The company was also concerned about the current political climate in the US. One developer did not hesitate to voice his disappointment.
“I was terribly disappointed, but not surprised by the executives. They are increasingly making decisions to maintain the political status quo, without taking a stand, without taking risks, even on a creative level.”
