Red Dead Redemption 2 writer finally reveals the truth behind the infamous whereabouts of Gavin.
Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption 2 is considered to be one of the greatest video games of all time, and some will argue that it’s better than any Grand Theft Auto entry has to offer. As much as I love GTA, I may be inclined to agree.
Speaking of Grand Theft Auto, Rockstar Games yesterday announced that GTA VI has suffered yet another delay, pushing it back towards the end of 2026.
Ah, Gavin, where art thou? A question not only continually asked by the Red Dead Redemption 2 NPC named Nigel, but countless fans of the classic western from Rockstar Games.
There have been many theories regarding the whereabouts over the years when it comes to our mysterious Gavin. Some say he died of a disease, and some say that he ran away from his over-obsessive stalker friend, Nigel or even a figment of his imagination.

Gavin is one of life’s biggest mysteries
The theories on Gavin have been a fun discussion since Red Dead Redemption 2 launched in 2018 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. That being said, if the aforementioned writer has confirmed the truth about the mysterious NPC, then I’ll feel a bit sad that the speculation might come to an abrupt end.
Former Rockstar Games writer Dan Houser was talking on the Lex Fridman podcast where the topic of Gavin came up.
So, what is the fate of Gavin? Well, it’s perhaps a bit more mundane than we may have hoped.

Dan Houser said that the writers on Red Dead Redemption 2 never definitively settled on a fate for Gavin, but he was a real NPC. They couldn’t decide whether he’s dead or alive. However, he also teased that there were plans to revisit the story of Gavin in a future game.
Houser also revealed that Nigel is considered a “maniac,” and if that is the case, it could lean into the theory that Gavin ran away from his obsessive friend. It will be interesting to see if we finally get to see Gavin in Red Dead Redemption 3, which is yet to be announced.
As soon as information drops on Red Dead Redemption 3, we’ll be sure to update you right away. One thing we know for sure is that it will arrive after GTA VI.
At the time of writing, Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to be released on 19 November 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The PC port hasn’t been announced.
