The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt could be getting an official brand new expansion, over 10 years after it was initially released.
I think it’s fair to say that none of us had on our bingo card that CD Projekt RED is working on a third expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and it could be set to release next year. If you say that you did, I don’t believe you.
The Witcher 3 was first released in 2015 on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and instantly became regarded as one of the best fantasy RPGs of all time, firmly alongside the likes of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Dragon Age: Origins, in my opinion.
The Witcher 3 Is One Of The Greats
CD Projekt RED’s The Witcher 3 was so good, in fact, that it was many fans’ entry into the series, despite being the third game. Typically, most fans’ introduction to any series would be with its first entry.
Later in 2015, The Witcher 3 would receive its first expansion with ‘Hearts of Stone’ in October, followed by ‘Blood & Wine’ in May 2016. Both of which are huge expansions, and perhaps could easily have been sold as standalone games.
Over the years, The Witcher 3 would be ported to multiple consoles, including the Nintendo Switch in 2019, and would receive a free new-gen upgrade on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in December 2022.
At this point, most might assume that CD Projekt RED is done with The Witcher 3, with Cyberpunk 2077 as its most recent game. Not to mention that The Witcher 4, a remake of the original The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2 are all in the works.
A Third Witcher 3 Expansion Would Be Wild
However, it seems that there’s no rest for the wicked, as they say. In June 2025, Twitter user Synth Potato shared a story via Insider Gaming and MP1st that CD Projekt RED is working on a third expansion for The Witcher 3 called ‘Fool’s Theory’, which is said to be the size of ‘Blood & Wine’.
Now, following a recent Q3 earnings call for CD Projekt RED, as shared by Twitter user b0ysbrokenheart, speculation on the ‘Fool’s Theory’ expansion has intensified.
CD Projekt RED CFO, Piotr Nielubowicz, confirmed that over 100 employees are working on a mystery project and considering that we know of at least three projects currently in the works (as mentioned above), it is believed this mystery project is the aforementioned ‘Fool’s Theory’.
As always, we should take unconfirmed rumours with a pinch of salt, until proven otherwise, especially when it relates to unannounced mystery projects, no matter how genuine they feel. If true, ‘Fool’s Theory’ will land sometime in 2026.
