After months of teasing from Samsung and Google, the Samsung Galaxy XR headset has been announced as the first Android XR headset to hit the market.
After all of the rumours, it has happened. The Samsung Galaxy XR headset has been announced and is finally here. The Samsung Galaxy XR headset is Google’s Android XR operating system, and the platform is built for headsets and smart glasses. The Android XR combines Google’s AI assistant Gemini with apps and games for maximum immersion while wearing the headset, and maximum multimodal AI functionality. The entire event revealing the new headset can be seen below, thanks to Samsung.
As the first product built on the new Android XR platform co-developed by Samsung, Google, and Qualcomm Technologies, the Galaxy XR showcases the “future of discovery, play and work,” enabling users to gain maximum immersion. The Android XR is the first step in Samsung’s long-term XR journey, with innovations to come across the full spectrum of XR form factors, including AI glasses.
By utilizing Google Gemini, the Samsung Galaxy XR is unlocking new possibilities with multimodal AI, and Samsung boasts “Galaxy XR doesn’t feel like a tool following users’ commands but a new type of AI companion that helps them manage their tasks, delivering natural and intuitive interactions through voice, vision and gesture” in headset form.

Under the hood, a Snapdragon XR Plus Gen 2 chipset from Qualcomm powers the headset, and it features a 3,552 x 3,840 microLED display that supports refresh rates of up to 90Hz. Wearers will have a 109-degree horizontal field of view and a 100-degree vertical field of view, and Samsung says the headset will weigh 545 grams (with the battery accounting for 302g of that), a more lightweight design for easier long usage sessions. Like other headsets (VR and XR), the battery life on the Samsung Galaxy XR is around 2-2.5 hours on “general use,” according to Samsung, which is par for the course on immersive headset technology.
The Samsung Galaxy XR headset is available starting today for $1,799, which is $1,700 less than the Apple Vision Pro XR headset, which recently got a refresh announcement (with the same price point). Currently, the Samsung Galaxy XR can only be bought from the official Samsung website or at Samsung Experience stores in the United States and South Korea.
