The upcoming action RPG developed by Obsidian Entertainment, The Outer Worlds 2, is one of Xbox’s biggest releases this year. So, it’s no surprise that it’s getting a physical version. However, there is a bit of a catch with the disc that may be considered a bit controversial.
The Outer Worlds 2 PS5 disc reportedly only carries 1GB of data
In a recent tweet from @Chris_TV_Live from Does It Play, they found some interesting information regarding the disc version of The Outer Worlds 2 for PS5. On the game’s box art, it has an “internet required” label on the front of the box, implying that the entire game may not actually be on the disc. As seen in the tweet below, it seems that is the case.
Chris found that just 1.32 GB of data is on the actual The Outer Worlds 2 PS5 disc. This means players cannot play from just the data on the disc alone, and do need an internet connection to play the game. However, the kicker here is that the game clocks in at 77 GB, which could actually fit on a single PS5 disc.
The reasoning behind this decision, and where the blame lies, is unknown. In a reply, Chris expresses that same sentiment and points out that Gears of War Reloaded and Ninja Gaiden 4 include everything needed to play on the disc.
Similar moves like this have been implemented by many companies. There are some cases where a disc isn’t even included, and inside the case is just a piece of paper with a download code on it. Nintendo recently introduced game-key cards, which require players to download the game from the eShop to play the game, but can still be shared with other players.
The Outer Worlds 2 launches for PS5 on October 29.
