Although it’s been pretty well received upon release, with an average rating of 4.75/5 on the PlayStation Store, God of War: Sons of Sparta is clearly not to the liking of the franchise’s creator.
In a video lasting around 10 minutes, David Jaffe, who directed the very first installment released in 2005, simply destroyed the 2.5D Metroidvania. He goes so far as to describe the title as “generic” and insulting “to fans [and] to the people who worked on the game”.
“I played it for barely an hour and I’ll never play it again. Honestly, stop thinking you’re the center of the universe! They keep stopping and making the characters talk nonstop. Plus, the voice acting is really bad. Who would want to play that?”
Jaffe also points to Sony’s desire to focus on the childhood of Kratos, a character “nobody likes”, by trying to make him “just another kid in a children’s show”.
“It really makes me angry. Not only because I have a personal connection to the brand and the franchise, but also because it shows a collapse of the tremendous creative work Sony has done in the past.
That they think this is what people want from God of War… I don’t know what to say. It’s lame, it’s dumb, it’s stupid! I advise you to avoid this thing.”
This isn’t the first time David Jaffe has attacked God of War since leaving Santa Monica Studio. He had already strongly criticized the narrative shift in the saga with the 2018 PS4 release.
