Nintendo has released update 22.0.0 for the Switch and Switch 2. While it fixes various issues and improves the system’s overall stability, it also introduces a rather surprising new feature.
A mode called Handheld Enhancement has been added. It allows Switch 1 games to run as if they were in their dock, but in handheld mode on Switch 2. Thus, instead of displaying at 720p, most games will run at 1080p in handheld mode.
Note that some titles are incompatible with this option. Currently, these include Super Mario Maker 2, Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu/Eevee, Super Mario 3D All-Stars, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, Clubhouse Games, Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum ‘n’ Fun!, and Pikmin 1+2. The reason for this incompatibility is that when using “Handheld Enhancement Mode,” touch controls are disabled for all titles.
Additionally, it is noted that the effect of this option may vary from one game to another, and that it is necessary to detach the Joy-Con 2 from the console to connect other controllers. There may also be impacts on the controls and functionality of certain games.
Finally, to enable this mode, go to System Settings on the Switch 2, then select System, Nintendo Switch Softward, and activate Handheld Mode Enhancement.
