Suspicions arise over PlayStation usage of a dynamic pricing system for games

The controversy surrounding dynamic pricing has resurfaced on the PlayStation Store, where several users claim to have noticed different prices for the same game, depending on their account or purchase history.

The concept, well known in other sectors such as concert tickets, involves adjusting prices based on demand, user profile, or time of purchase. Sony reportedly began testing this system in 2024, and new accounts reinforce this hypothesis.

On Reddit, one gamer noticed that Red Dead Redemption 2: Ultimate Edition was listed at $19.99 on their account, but $14.99 on their partner’s account, despite being in the same region and using the same currency. Other internet users report similar discrepancies on titles such as Astro Bot, Spider-Man 2, and Horizon Forbidden West.

Sony has never confirmed the use of such a pricing policy. Officially, these variations could be the result of A/B testing or regional cache errors. But for many gamers, these repeated differences suggest that PlayStation is indeed experimenting with an adaptive pricing system.
