A surprise PlayStation 5 game that just launched as part of a massive franchise has received some surprisingly negative reviews.
What PS5 action game is getting bad reviews?
God of War Sons of Sparta, the surprise two-dimensional Metroidvania game that’s set in the iconic world of God of War, was announced and shadow dropped at the same time on February 12, 2026. The pixelated adventure game survives as a prequel to the entire God of War series and follows Kratos’ journey through the Spartan military.
Unfortunately, the game doesn’t seem to be garnering much in the way of positive reviews. On Metacritic, the game holds a 70 score, but has received more mixed reviews than anything else. Many praise the game’s tight platforming and use of the Metroidvania genre, but lament its lack of adding anything new to the genre or delivering any uniqueness to the game as a whole.
GamesRadar+’s Oscar Taylor-Kent said the game “struggles to deliver on the best of God of War or the best the Metroidvania genre has to offer,” while CGMagazine’s Zubi Khan called it “a solid outing that takes the franchise into a new direction while feeling a bit too safe and by the numbers for enthusiasts of the genre to truly appreciate.”
Should its score not improve a bit, Sons of Sparta would have the designation of being the worst-reviewed game in the God of War franchise. Previously, that was held by the PlayStation 3 game God of War: Ascension, which released in 2013. Alongside Sons of Sparta’s release, developer Santa Monica Studio also announced that a God of War Trilogy Remake was in the works, with all three of the original game set to be redone.
