After the abundance of teasers yesterday, Supermassive Games has finally revealed more of Directive 8020, in a new release date trailer that embodies terror.
After years in development and delays, Directive 8020 finally has a release date, and it’s coming this year. The release timing for the next Supermassive Games title breaks from the studio’s annual release pattern established by The Dark Pictures Anthology, a schedule that was deemed impossible after the new sci-fi horror project was pushed out of 2025. The game was previously announced for an October 2025 launch but was delayed after the studio announced layoffs. The latest trailer, which confirms a May 12 release date, can be seen below.
Directive 8020 is Supermassive’s first foray into sci-fi, and it centres on the stranded crew of a crashed colony ship on planet Tau Ceti f. The game stars Briana Young (the ship’s pilot, played by actress Lashana Lynch), who must make a crucial decision on who among her team to trust, as an alien organism capable of mimicking any crewmate has infiltrated the humans, like a realistic version of Among Us.
Like other productions from Supermassive Games, Directive 8020 leans into a more narrative-focused experience. It is a cinematic, choice-driven adventure that lets players shape the crew’s destiny. Key decisions can change the story’s direction and ultimately determine the cast’s survival rate. The title can also be played in five-player local co-op, with online multiplayer listed as “coming soon.”

Alongside improved visuals, controls and stealth mechanics compared with the rest of the developer’s catalogue, another new feature in Directive 8020 is the ability to rewind and revisit key “Turning Points” in the story to explore alternate storylines and save key characters from death. There is also an option to play without this feature, ensuring decisions remain final, as in previous entries. It is also worth noting that Supermassive Games has revealed the new sci-fi title will be more standalone, meaning fans should not expect cameos from recurring characters from The Dark Pictures Anthology.
Directive 8020 launches on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on May 12.Â
