New leaked images have confirmed several characters for the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie, ahead of a rumoured trailer later this month.
While we’re still in the dark around any successor to Super Mario Odyssey, the first half of 2026 has a pretty substantial line-up for fans of Nintendo’s portly plumber.
Along with Mario Tennis Fever and the Switch 2 edition of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, there is The Super Mario Galaxy Movie on April 3, 2026. It is the sequel to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, based on the Super Mario Galaxy video games.
Nintendo released a short teaser for the film in September, and confirmed some returning cast members, but it seems more characters have been let out of the bag thanks to a promotional box of cookie dough.
As listed on the website of US supermarket Tops, Pillsbury has a new product coming out based on the movie, titled ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Shape Sugar Cookie Dough’.
The pre-cut cookies are shaped after Yoshi’s eggs, and the box itself is plastered with new artwork of the green dinosaur – confirming his presence in the movie and what he will look like.
Nintendo hasn’t confirmed Yoshi for the film, but a post-credits teaser in the original movie, showing a hatching egg, did imply he would make an appearance. Similar, Yoshi artwork also appeared on a can of Old Spice deodorant, which was the first thing to leak from the sequel.

Yoshi’s presence makes sense considering Nintendo is set to launch a new game, Yoshi And The Mysterious Book, in spring 2026 – so all signs point to the classic sidekick being a significant part of the next movie.
A closer look at the packaging reveals some other likely new characters for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. On the back of the box, a connect-the-dots map shows some green graffiti in the shape of Bowser Jr.’s head, which suggests he’ll make an appearance.
Rosalina’s observatory from the original Super Mario Galaxy is featured too, which further implies she’ll pop up in some capacity.
Bowser Jr. first appeared in 2002’s Super Mario Sunshine, where his graffiti was prominently featured throughout. Interestingly, the leaked Old Spice cans showed a Tostarenan character (skeletons wearing traditional Mexican outfits) from Super Mario Odyssey, so it sounds like this sequel will encompass a broad range of 3D Mario history.

The only confirmed characters for the sequel so far are Mario (Chris Pratt), Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), Luigi (Charlie Day), Bowser (Jack Black), Toad (Keegan-Michael Key), and Kamek (Kevin Michael Richardson).
It’s unclear if Yoshi will be fully voiced or simply gargle like his gaming counterpart, but there’s a chance we’ll find out very soon. According to film scoops outlet My Time To Shine, a trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will be shown before screenings of Wicked: For Good, which debuts in cinemas on November 21.
This means a new trailer could launch on that date, or at some point before. Nintendo debuted a trailer for the first movie in a special Direct showcase, so it’s possible the company will do the same for the sequel.
While there’s no word on when a new 3D Mario game could launch, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto has referred to a successor to Super Mario Odyssey in an interview with Japanese art and architecture magazine, Casa Brutus.
‘With the help of many passionate people outside our company, Mario has expanded into theme parks and movies, and I’m really looking forward to how things will develop from here,’ Miyamoto said (via machine translation).
‘Up through Super Mario Odyssey, I feel we’ve done just about everything we could on the Switch. In the past, whenever a new console came out, we always released a new Mario game, so I do wonder how the current team will take on that challenge.’
Elsewhere, Miyamoto explained how he isn’t directly involved in the development of new Mario titles, but he does still test them. ‘Nowadays, I have teammates who help maintain the world of Mario, so I entrust much of it to them,’ he added.
‘Even so, I always personally play through about the first 30 minutes of the game and check the interface thoroughly – to make sure it really feels like Mario.’
Along with various Mario spin-offs, Nintendo’s gaming slate for 2026 includes Splatoon Raiders and Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave.
