October is an absolutely stacked month for video game releases.
Thereâs Ghost of YĆtei, Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2, Little Nightmares 3, Battlefield 6, PokĂ©mon Legends: Z-A, and The Outer Worlds 2 – and thatâs just to name a few titles.
My backlog is quaking just thinking about whatâs ahead, but will that stop me from enjoying a little free treat?
No, it will not.
That treat comes in the form of Kaiju No. 8 The Game, a new free turn-based RPG thatâs landed on Steam.
Developed and published by Akatsuki Games, Kaiju No. 8 The Game is, of course, inspired by the Kaiju No. 8 manga series and subsequent anime adaptation.
âBased on the global hit anime, adapted from the Shonen Jump+ sensation, KAIJU NO. 8 THE GAME brings you into the heart of the action! Witness epic battles between the Japan Anti-Kaiju Defence Force and cataclysmic Kaiju, all rendered in breathtaking graphics,â teases the synopsis.
The game makes use of a turn-based combat system where youâll select your Defence Force officersâ skills in order to attack exposed Kaiju cores, with Ultimate Attacks delivering the final blow.
Whether itâs Kikoru Shinomiyaâs axe or Soshiro Hoshinaâs blades, youâll be able to feel the full force of an array of iconic weapons, brought to life with âstunning, high-end graphicsâ.
As for the story, Kaiju No. 8 The Game retells the animeâs familiar tale which also means that thereâs nothing stopping newcomers from enjoying this title; you donât really need any prior knowledge.
If you are a returning fan though, there are certain narrative threads which are original this time around, allowing you to get to know your favourite characters even better.
It all sounds rather promising, although perhaps early review scores tell a slightly different story.
Kaiju No. 8 The Game is just one day old but has already attracted a âmixedâ rating on Steam.
I should stress though that 69% players enjoyed what they played, leaving a positive review, correct at the time of writing.
It seems the combat, story, and graphics have all drawn praise.
As for those who arenât as pleased, well, it actually appears that theyâre angry that the devsâ previous game, Tribe Nine, is shutting down services in November.
The acclaimed title will terminate on 27 November which means Chapter Four is no longer due to arrive.
Many believe that Akatsuki Games is directing resources towards Kaiju No. 8 The Game and thus hold a little resentment for it.
Itâs perhaps fair to say then that the negative reviews may not truly be indicative of Kaiju No. 8 The Gameâs quality.
Itâs free so I highly urge you to give this one a try yourself.
