As the new year approaches, it’s easy to fixate on the major releases coming our way.
Grand Theft Auto VI, Marvel’s Wolverine, and 007 First Light are just a couple of the year’s headliners.
I’m all for that, but I also think it’s important to dedicate time to look towards the new indie titles that are set to land.
ShantyTown is one such example, launching on 16 April 2026; Ahead of that date, a charming new demo is available for PC users to sample via Steam.
Developed by Erik Rempen and set to be published by Kinephantom Games, ShantyTown is pitched by developers as a ‘relaxing diorama-building game about finding beauty in everyday chaos”.
I think we could all do with a little bit of that.
“This game is inspired by my love for densely built cities around the world—the kind of places where every wall, alley, and rooftop tells a story,” Erik wrote.
“You’ll be encouraged to build upwards, fill the smallest gaps, and find clever ways to place light sources or decorations to bring your creations to life.
“Just like when you’re packing a bag, there’s always room for one more thing!”
In addition to building, you’ll need to survey various sites, photographing 20 different locations across the game.

Each site boasts its own unique layout and atmosphere, and from there you can begin building your creation.
All builds must include light, utilities, and decorations in order to be marked as complete. When that’s achieved, you’ll unlock new items.
ShantyTown features a Photo Mode so you can capture your creations and share them with friends.
There Are no Right or Wrong Ways to Play
“Each location comes with its own twists and sights. You might be working with food trucks, neon signs, or smokestacks,” Erik teases.
“The challenge isn’t in following rules, but in making something that feels alive within ShantyTown.
“This is a casual game through and through. There are no wrong answers here. Remember to make each placement personal, and every messy little corner adds to the charm.”
There are hidden objects to be found, plus each locations’ story will unfold as you progress with your build.
As I mentioned, ShantyTown is set to launch on PC via Steam on 16 April 2026, but you enjoy the game’s demo now.
There’s a tutorial and then players can enjoy three of the game’s maps, with plenty of items available to utilise.
Enjoy what you play? Add ShantyTown to your wishlist to stay up to date on its progress.
