Steam 9/10 Free Game Is Perfect For Bethesda Fans

With Todd Howard revealing that The Elder Scrolls 6 is still a long way away from launch and Fallout 5 also shows no signs of rearing its head, Bethesda fans are feeling disheartened to say the least.

However, it is not all doom and gloom as this brand-new free game spotted on Steam is the perfect thing for Bethesda lovers.

Inspired by retro shooters such as DOOM and Wolfenstein, Darkenstein 3D (see what they did there?) is a brand-new FPS which serves as a “love letter to the games that defined a generation.”

Developed by Rowye and published by MicroProse Software, Darkenstein 3D is a tough and fast FPS that requires skill and a whole lot of patience but the end result will be oh so worth it. Despite being added to Steam on 21 October, it has already garnered a ‘Very Positive’ rating so it is safe to say that fans are loving this nod to some of the early Bethesda titles.

In this retro, boomer-shooter, players will need to dodge bullets and head deep behind enemy lines whilst taking on the role of Hobo Guy: a furious American drifter caught in 1940s Germany.

You may be outnumbered and outgunned, but your anger more than makes up for your shortcomings as it is not just about justice, this is personal.

You will have to rescue your dog.

After your loyal hound Gunther was taken by Nazi forces, you soon discover that he is locked up deep inside an enemy fortress and you are prepared to do whatever it takes to get him back.

Blending secrets, explosions, and a story driven by desperation, Darkenstein 3D features everything from alien conspiracies to strange powers and the hidden horrors buried beneath a world crumbling under war.

With old-school gunplay, progressive levels, a dynamic companion and bloody visuals, Darkenstein 3D is everything you would expect from a retro shooter and it seems as though players agree.

“Surprised this was free,” one positive Steam review reads.

“A one-man-made tribute to Wolfenstein 3D, but a whole new game. Impressive scope and scale with a goofy story and a lot of weapon variety.”

Another agreed, writing, “Proof that you can make a good FPS game in unity.

One of the best Wolfenstein-inspired fan games I have ever played!

“One dev is super impressive!”

Darkenstein 3D is indeed absolutely free to download, keep, and play for PC users courtesy of Steam and with just one developer at its head, this is impressive to say the least.

So if you want to experience the old days of Bethesda’s releases, this freebie is the perfect one for you.
