Somehow, someway, the worlds of Stardew Valley and Resident Evil have collided in this new farming RPG.
I did not think for a single second that we’d ever get a game that is seemingly inspired by the likes of Stardew Valley and Resident Evil, but here we are. To be fair, if there was ever a game that would tempt me to play a cosy farming sim, it’s indie games like this.
It goes without saying (but I’ll say it anyway), Stardew Valley and Resident Evil are two very, very different properties. For starters, Stardew Valley is an indie darling about a game that sees you inherit a farm and interact with a host of friendly villagers.
Then we have the Capcom Resident Evil 4, which has you interact with villagers, but nothing about them is cosy. They live to stick a pitchfork in your face. But they’re charming, in their own kinda way, if you like pitchfolks to the face, I guess.
Anyway, what is this cosy farming game that can be described as Stardew Valley and Resident Evil, I hear you ask? The game in question is called Welcome to Elderfield, developed by Chris Cote.
“Nothing is usual in the secluded town of Elderfield. The townsfolk are odd, strange beings who shift about in the dark, and the local news reports seem more mysterious by the day. This is where you were born, and rarely do those born here leave,” reads the ominous synopsis on Steam.
“But, there is work to be done. Now finished with your schooling, you have an endless supply of free time and very little direction. Explore, earn money, make friends, solve mysteries, start a farm, cook food, go fishing, beseech the Old Gods, talk to the dead, cower beneath the Pale Moon and try not to die in your sleep. Welcome to Elderfield.”
Welcome to Elderfield, which isn’t quite out yet in its full form; however, you can download and play its free alpha demo today, ahead of its launch in October. So, it arrives just in time for Halloween.
At the time of writing, Welcome to Elderfield has a “Very Positive” user review rating on Steam, which is nice to see.
Judging by some of the reviews, while a bit buggy in places, it looks like this game has a lot of potential. Hopefully, the developer can iron out the reported bugs with a few updates or so.
As long as it suffers no delay, Welcome to Elderfield is scheduled to be released on 7 October 2025 on Steam.
