Ghost of Tsushima follow-up Ghost of YĹŤtei is finally on the way next month, but I have something you may want to check out in the meantime.
Faraway Lands: Rise of Yokai is an upcoming survival RPG from developer Ufuk Yurtman.
It’s perhaps what you’d get if you mixed together Ghost of Tsushima’s setting with Stardew Valley’s aesthetics.
The gameplay, however, definitely takes inspiration from the likes of Valheim.
“Faraway Lands: Rise of Yokai is a unique side-scrolling base-building and survival game set in mystical feudal Japan,” the description begins.
“As the newly appointed lord, grow your settlement into a stronghold and withstand relentless Yokai assaults under the cover of night. Recruit diverse immigrants with unique traits, explore uncharted territories, forge new alliances, and shape the destiny of a realm torn between light and darkness,” it continues.
As that synopsis suggests, you won’t just build a simple base but an entire town which, naturally, will look beautiful as you make use of wonderful traditional Japanese architecture.
Once your settlement is established, you’ll want to set up a research system which’ll be based within a pagoda you dedicate to your settlement’s scholars.
Here, you can advance through various skill threads, unlocking upgrades that’ll allow you to push your base to the next level.
It’s up to you to make decisions that’ll help your community thrive, so be careful what path you set it upon.
Each person within your community can be assigned a role; they each have unique skills so do give it some thought as to where you send them.
Resource gathering, crafting, and farming are amongst some of the tasks that’ll need carrying out.
You’ll also want plenty of people dedicated to defence as the Yōkai are dead set upon tearing your community apart as soon as night falls.
For example, you’ll be able to train Samurai and Onmyōji to defend your perimeters.
And you will venture outside of your community’s walls to visit other territories, establishing trade routes and good relations with your neighbours.
Alliances will be needed to fend off the YĹŤkai.
I’ve yet to even mention the game’s dynamic weather system as well the challenges that poses.
Faraway Lands: Rise of Yokai is due to launch on PC via Steam, although an exact release date is yet to be announced.
You can, though, enjoy a demo for the game (also on Steam) to get a feel for what it has to offer.
Like what you play? I’m sure the devs would appreciate you wishlisting the title.
This sounds like an exciting blend of game elements! It’s always interesting to see how different genres can come together. Looking forward to seeing how this new RPG turns out!
Absolutely, it’s fascinating how developers can combine genres to create something fresh! The farming mechanics from Stardew Valley could really add depth to the exploration and combat elements of Ghost of Tsushima. I’m curious to see how the two styles will mesh in gameplay!
