The Game Awards 2025 has unveiled two brand new Star Wars games: an action RPG and a new racer from the makers of Burnout.
Most of the big announcements at The Game Awards had already leaked out ahead of time, but not necessarily with the full details. It was said that a major new Star Wars game was to be announced, with one leaker revealing that its name ended with ‘The Old Republic’.
That turned out to be true, but the obvious assumptions were a reboot for the Knights Of The Old Republic remake or a rumoured Total War game. In the end though it was something completely unexpected: a brand new entry in the series by the director and producer of the original, and his new developer Arcanaut Studios.
All that was shown was a short pre-rendered trailer, so there’s very little concrete information, but it’s billed as a ‘narrative-driven, single-player role-playing game’ and ‘spiritual successor’ to the Knights of The Old Republic – not a sequel – with a ‘brand new story with new characters’.
You will still be able to play your Force-channelling character as a Light or Dark Side user, but beyond that there’s no other information on the gameplay, beyond the fact that you’ll be able to change the direction of the story based on your in-game decisions.
The game is only in ‘early development’, with no hint of a release year, which likely means it’s going to be 2027 or later.

One detail we did notice – such that we realised it was a Star Wars game long before the lightsaber sound effect at the end of the trailer – was that the spaceship at the beginning is a Fondor Haulcraft.
That’s the kind of ship flown by Luthen Rael in the Andor TV show, which itself included references to the Rakatan Empire from The Old Republic games.
It may well be the same ship, although that would make it very old, but it’s the only real clue as to what’s going on, as a Jedi visits the crash site of a very large object. We did wonder at the time whether it might be the Star Forge, but the press screenshot identifies it as an ‘ancient starship’.
When is Star Wars: Galactic Racing coming out?
If Fate Of The Old Republic was only a half surprise one of the very few games that came completely out of the blue was also a Star Wars game: a belated follow-up to the Pod Racer titles of the early 2000s, in the form of Galactic Racing.
The game is one of the few to be set in the sequel era of the universe, with the planets Jakku (the desert planet Rey lived on) and what looks like Kijimi (the occupied planet that gets blown up in The Rise of Skywalker). Apparently, the racer will feature branching routes but despite there being a story campaign there’s a promise of no Force powers.
We’re not sure there were any actual pod racers in the footage shown, but an older Sebulba turns up at the end and the game did seem to be following very much in the style of the lesser known Racers Revenge on the PlayStation 2.
Star Wars: Galactic Racing will be out in 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC and is being made Fuse Games in the UK, who are largely made-up of ex-Criterion staff who worked on the Burnout and Need For Speed series – including former general manager Matt Webster.
