Sony-owned studio Firesprite reportedly canceled several projects, including a Breaking Bad VR game

Times are tough for virtual reality. As a result, for a studio specializing in VR games like Firesprite, the past few years have been turbulent. The website MP1st has looked back at various projects scrapped by the PlayStation-owned developer.

Back in 2024, the studio known for developing Horizon Call of the Mountain for the PS VR2 was hit by a wave of layoffs. Both a Twisted Metal battle royale game and another unknown project were cancelled then.

Prior to that, Firesprite apparently attempted to develop a Breaking Bad virtual reality game between 2017 and 2018. It was clearly intended to be a narrative experience rather than a traditional game. Its format was similar to that of Stranger Things: The VR Experience. Several iconic locations from the series, such as Walter White’s garden and the New Mexico desert, were featured in the project.

Finally, after this abandoned game, the studio conceived a new horror sci-fi franchise between 2018 and 2020. Unfortunately, it never progressed beyond the prototype stage. This title was apparently quite similar to Dead Space. Some concept art has been shared.

Currently, Firesprite appears to be working on a project called Project Pillar, which is being developed using Unreal Engine 5.
