An insider claims Sony has got Gran Turismo 7 working on the Nintendo Switch 2, in what could be a test drive for its rumoured handheld.

As we’ve seen through great ports of Star Wars Outlaws and Final Fantasy 7 Remake, and more recently Resident Evil Requiem, the Nintendo Switch 2 appears to be a much more powerful console than many perhaps expected.

The handheld does run these titles with some compromises, like lower frame rates and less fidelity when compared to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, but so far the differences have been pretty minor considering the Switch 2 is a portable system.

Based on the word of Sony and Microsoft executives, handhelds look set to play some kind of role in both companies plans for the next generation. And to that end, it seems Sony has been taking a great deal of interest in the Switch 2.

This is according to insider Jeff Grubb, who recently revealed how he’s heard that Sony got Gran Turismo 7 running on a Nintendo Switch 2.

While discussing the possibility of Gran Turismo 7 coming to PC, on his podcast Game Mess Decides, Grubb said: ‘I heard recently that Gran Turismo [7] was running on the Switch 2. I don’t think it’s going to come to the Switch 2, but I heard it was running on the Switch 2.’

Gran Turismo 7 feels like an unlikely candidate for Nintendo’s console, considering the realistic driving sim is very outside of the system’s target audience. However, as a graphical powerhouse, the racing game is a good way for Sony to test out the system’s capabilities.

But, why would Sony want to test it? It could be for future Switch 2 ports. Sony previously launched Lego Horizon Adventures on Switch, so it might be considering what else it can bring to Nintendo’s system. Or, just as likely, the company is simply weighing up the competition, to gauge its capabilities.

This may well relate to Sony’s rumoured plans for a new PlayStation handheld. Past rumours have suggested the handheld will take a few cues from Nintendo’s hybrid model, and combined with the newly added power saver mode on PlayStation 5 for certain games, it sounds like Sony is experimenting with ways to make PlayStation 5 titles run on less powerful hardware.

So, if Sony does have Gran Turismo 7 running on the Switch 2, it could be a classic case of one company reverse engineering a competitor to figure out how it all works. Sony has hinted at plans for a handheld, although it’s not confirmed anything and certainly hasn’t shown any hardware in public.

However, it’s unclear how Sony’s handheld plans might be tied to the PlayStation 6. According to reports, the ongoing memory chip shortage could see Sony delay its next generation plans to 2029, but if the handheld is based on PlayStation 5 hardware that might not necessarily be a problem.
