Several details on the canceled sequel to Dante’s Inferno have leaked

Dante’s Inferno is a beat ’em up game heavily inspired by the first God of War trilogy that released back in February 2010. It was published by EA, and despite being an extremely ambitious title, its critical and commercial reception ended up being very mixed.

Visceral Games was working on a sequel before it was canceled by the publisher. The publisher then focused on the Dead Space series and later developed Battlefield Hardline. Unfortunately, the company closed its doors in 2017.

In any case, IGN managed to get hold of the 240-page script for a certain Dante’s Inferno 2: Purgatorio. It was written by Joshua Rubin, who was also co-writer on Assassin’s Creed 2. The game had reached a fairly advanced stage of pre-production. The goal with this second installment was to go beyond the limits of its predecessor, with a quality gap equivalent to that between Assassin’s Creed 1 and 2, or between the first three God of War games and the one released in 2018 on PS4.

the classic literary work, blending action with rich storytelling. It’s a shame we won’t see how they would have expanded on that world. I wonder if they were planning to explore more of the Inferno’s circles or introduce new characters from Dante’s journey.

I completely agree! The combination of action and storytelling was a unique aspect of the game. It would have been fascinating to see how they would have expanded on Dante’s journey and explored deeper themes from the original text in a sequel.
