S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 : Heart of Chornobyl Departs Game Pass Right Before PS5 Version Launches

In a surprise move, Microsoft has revealed that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl will leave Xbox Game Pass this month, compelling subscribers who have accessed it through the service to buy it outright if they wish to continue playing.

The timing is especially striking given the upcoming launch of the PS5 version on November 20th. Game Pass players now find themselves in a bind: either commit to buying the game before the PS5 version arrives or lose access.

From the players’ perspective, some argue that what was presented as an inclusive “day-one” Game Pass launch is being reversed sooner than expected. Others, however, counter that this is simply how subscription services operate, noting that games often rotate in and out of Game Pass.

Bottom line: For the publisher and developer, the logic appears to center on shifting the position of their title ahead of its multi-platform rollout. Exiting Game Pass now allows the PS5 version to launch without being bundled in the service, potentially preserving full retail purchase revenue rather than relying on subscription access. Still, the abruptness has sparked criticism that early adopters through Game Pass were misled about the permanence of their access.
