In order to combat sexual predators and online harassment, Roblox will apply a significant restriction to its users.
Starting next week, facial recognition will be required to chat online. This feature will group users of the same age in a chat room to limit “interactions between adults and children under 16”, while providing “a positive and appropriate experience”. In addition, children under 9 will be required to obtain parental consent.
Already tested in several countries (Australia, the Netherlands, New Zealand), the feature will be rolled out worldwide. Its deployment will take about a week. To verify their age, users will have to provide a video selfie which will be deleted immediately once their age has been estimated.
