Resident Evil Requiem players are stunned after iconic characters make a cheeky return after 28 years!
Well, when I say “28 years”, they have made returns in the 2019 Resident Evil 2 remake, but when it comes to featuring in a mainline game in the campaign, not a spin-off or an addition mode, it is a return nearly three decades in the making, kinda.
Resident Evil Requiem Earns My First 10/10
“As a horror game in its own right, Resident Evil Requiem is a very solid nine out of ten, but as a passionate fan of the series, it earns an additional bonus point thanks to the attention to detail and craft that’s gone into every pore of this game,” I said in my review.
In the original Resident Evil 2, two unlockable modes tasked you with escaping Raccoon City, as you make your way through the monster-infested sewers and the RPD, and frantically get to the chopper!
The two modes in question are called ‘The 4th Survivor’ and ‘The Tofu Survivor’. In the first mode, you play as the infamous Umbrella Security Operator, Hunk, aka “The Grim Reaper”.
Hunk’s run was very tough to get from A to B, as you fight through the relentless hordes equipped with a handgun, shotgun, and magnum. As well as a limited supply of ammo and two mixed health herbs.
As for Tofu (yes, he’s a planet/mild-based food), he was equipped with a combat knife and two mixed herbs. His run was a lot more difficult than Hunk’s, and that’s saying something.
Resident Evil Requiem Spoilers Ahead!

Following the launch of Resident Evil Requiem, players have discovered the two cameo returns of Hunk and Tofu. Albeit one being more obvious than the other.
While Hunk isn’t mentioned by name in Resident Evil Requiem, late in the campaign, Leon S. Kennedy gets into a fight with an operative in a new secret Umbrella underground laboratory that looks suspiciously like Hunk.
While Leon and Hunk never met directly in Resident Evil 2 (1998) and the remake, in Requiem, he makes us very aware that he’s been looking forward to duelling with the former RPD rookie for quite some time. So he may not introduce himself as Hunk, but at the very least, he has to be a nod to the character.
As for Tofu, he can be encountered very briefly in the destroyed RPD when Leon returns to the location after 28 years. Tofu can quickly be seen making his way past the Reception Desk room on the outside of the rubble, sporting Jill Valentine’s navy blue S.T.A.R.S. beret.
Resident Evil Requiem is out now on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2.
