There are hints that Resident Evil Requiem could be Leon’s final outing, if Capcom’s teases are anything to go by.
It may have been one of the worst-kept secrets of the year, but Capcom finally revealed Leon’s involvement in the plot of Resident Evil Requiem at The Game Awards last week.
In the latest trailer, Leon is teased to appear in Resident Evil Requiem as the game’s second protagonist, filling in the more action-heavy segments as opposed to Grace Ashcroft’s more horror-aligned gameplay sequences.
It looks like Leon’s involvement is going to be a huge part of the story too, and may even potentially kill him off.
Will Leon Kennedy Die in Resident Evil Requiem?
As fans have pointed out, there seems to be an infection on Leon’s neck, seen in several shots of the trailer.
It’s brief, but we catch some rather obvious glimpses of it (thanks, VGTimes for the image).
Leon is also seen sporting a full pair of gloves, as opposed to his usual fingerless ones. Almost like he’s trying to hide something. Or he could just be chilly.
However, there are more signs pointing to this potentially being the end of the road for Leon. Fans also spotted that the vehicle Leon drives in the trailer has a registration plate reading “ND 9642”.
The numbers correspond to the Resident Evil games that Leon has starred in: RE9, RE6, RE4, and RE2. And the number 9 is preceded by “ND”, which could mean “End”.
Let’s not forget the subtitle of the game too, “Requiem”. The word is Latin for “rest”, and is part of a musical composition traditionally performed at Catholic funerals to pray for the soul’s eternal rest.
All these signs could hint at Resident Evil Requiem being the final game featuring Leon, with Capcom shifting the series away from the old guard of characters and slowly focusing on a new cast.
In Resident Evil Village, Ethan Winters’ daughter Rosemary was being set up as a major character following her appearance in the game’s epilogue and the Shadows of Rose expansion.
Meanwhile, it looks like Resident Evil Requiem’s Grace could also be set up as a new protagonist for future installments if she proves to be popular with fans.
However, series mainstays Jill Valentine and Claire Redfield are still nowhere to be seen, so it’s possible that they could still show up in a future game.
