Capcom’s Resident Evil Requiem seems to have had a massive launch, as it instantly breaks records for the franchise on Steam.

Resident Evil is Capcom’s highest-selling franchise in terms of cumulative sales, but the latest entry could surpass even the publisher’s lofty expectations.

There have already been reports of physical copies selling out worldwide, ahead of its launch today (February 27), and now the game is officially out it’s already broken the series’ record on Steam… within just one hour.

At the time of writing, Resident Evil Requiem has achieved a 24 hour concurrent peak of 267,509 players on Steam (via SteamDB). This is almost 100,000 players more than the series’ previous record, with 2023’s Resident Evil 4, which peaked with 168,191 players.

Even more impressively, it is currently the fourth most-played game on Steam, behind unshakeable tentpoles Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, and PUBG: Battlegrounds, and ahead of Arc Raiders and Apex Legends. Just to hammer home the point, it only launched on PC at 5am GMT on February 27, and hit this peak within one hour of going on sale.

There’s been a steady increase in PC players over recent years, so an improvement over Resident Evil 4’s player numbers from 2023 isn’t too surprising. However, an increase of nearly 100,000 players – on a platform which isn’t typically associated with Resident Evil – suggests Capcom has a big hit on their hands.

A new high for Leon (SteamDB)

The highest-selling Resident Evil game ever is 2019’s Resident Evil 2 remake, which has sold 16.8 million copies as of December 31, 2025. The fastest-selling, meanwhile, is Resident Evil 4 remake, which has sold 12.2 million copies since March 2023.

All signs so far suggest Resident Evil Requiem could reach (and eventually surpass) those numbers, but we’ll have to wait for Capcom’s official figures in the coming months.

While it’s unclear if we’ll ever get breakdown of sales between platforms, it’ll be interesting to see how well it performs on the Nintendo Switch 2.

This is the first time a major third party title has had a simultaneous launch on Nintendo’s new console alongside the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, so it might be a litmus test for future third party support.

Beyond Resident Evil Requiem, Capcom is rumoured to be working on remakes of Resident Evil Code: Veronica and Resident Evil Zero.
