If youโre after a new horror that can be described as Resident Evil meets The Last of Us, then this old-school horror might be your cup of tea.
As much as I love modern horror games, such as Cronos: The New Dawn and Silent Hill f, both of which were released last year, not to mention the upcoming Resident Evil Requiem, sometimes it’s nice to take a trip down memory lane.
While not the originator of the survival horror genre, the likes of Resident Evil (1996) and Silent Hill (1999) on the PlayStation certainly helped it become more mainstream. Now and again, we get a modern horror game with old-school vibes. One such game that comes to mind is the indie title, Tormented Souls. Towards the end of last year its sequel arrived on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. So, if youโve not played either of those games, I highly recommend them.
But today’s old-school-inspired survival horror game I’ve found that might be worth plonking on your radar is Ground Zero, developed by Malformation Games and published by Kwalee.
Check out Ground Zero!
โFight through post-apocalyptic South Korea in this retro survival horror. Uncover the truth behind the devastating meteor impact that left the country in ruins and turned every living organism into a terrifying monstrosity. Fight. Solve puzzles. Upgrade gear. Make every bullet count,โ reads the synopsis of Ground Zero on Steam. I’m absolutely loving the trailer, check it out quickly before you go.

Jill, Is That You?
After watching its gameplay trailers, I think that Ground Zero looks like it has a lot of charm, like a gorgeous throwback from the PlayStation 2 era. It has mutant creatures that would not look out of place in Resident Evil Outbreak, and the protagonist herself looks very Jill Valentine-inspired.
โThis looks really cool! Console release in the future, hopefully?โ asked Spooky-Wook in the comments section on YouTube.
โIt gives off a combo of The Thing, Parasite Eve, and Resident Evil vibes. Love it!โ exclaimed LilFoxJustGo.
At the time of writing, Ground Zero does not have a release date, but you can download and play its free demo right now via Steam. Also, be sure you add it to your wishlist to be notified when it finally gets a full release date!
Ground Zero is expected to be released sometime in 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
