Remothered: Red Nun’s Legacy Aims to Conclude the Survival Horror Story

The Remothered series is getting a final chapter. During a recent announcement, developer Stormind Games revealed Remothered: Red Nun’s Legacy, the third and final entry in its survival horror franchise. Coming six years after the release of Remothered: Broken Porcelain, the sequel that received a mixed reception when it launched in 2020, I was very surprised by this.

The studio says the decision to return to the series was driven by both its history with the franchise and the community that has continued to support it over the years.

Remothered was the first game we developed at the very beginning of our journey, and after our experiences with A Quiet Place and Mafia: The Old Country, we returned to the series because we couldn’t accept seeing Remothered fade away,” said Stormind CEO Antonio Cannata. “We decided to make this game out of a strong sense of respect and responsibility toward Remothered and its community, who thought this project had been abandoned.”

The Remothered franchise began with Remothered: Tormented Fathers in 2018. The game quickly found an audience among horror fans thanks to its more tense, stealth-focused hide-and-seek gameplay and strong story. It also helped for me that the main character looked like 1991’s The Silence of the Lambs Jodie Foster, letting me envision this as another one of her journeys. It leaned heavily into classic survival horror ideas, putting a focus on exploration, puzzle-solving, and avoiding enemies that felt grounded and human rather than turning the experience into a combat-heavy one.

The sequel, Remothered: Broken Porcelain, came out in 2020, but unfortunately, it never quite landed the way the original did, with the general reception pointing to technical and pacing issues that made it difficult to fully enjoy what the game was trying to accomplish.

Since then, the developers at Stormind Games have been on several other projects outside the Remothered universe. The studio worked on A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead, which also had less than a stellar launch, alongside publisher Saber Interactive, adapting the popular film franchise into a horror game. More recently, the team also collaborated with Hangar 13 on Mafia: The Old Country, adding another mixed reception to the team’s portfolio.

Now, with Red Nun’s Legacy, the developer is returning to the series that first put it on the map. According to game director Antonio Cutrona, the upcoming entry will both expand the series’ gameplay and bring the story to a conclusion.

Remothered: Red Nun’s Legacy will dig deep into the story and present new special skills that expand the gameplay pillars of Remothered,” Cutrona said. “While the game is a standalone experience that fans of old-school horror can dive right into and enjoy without playing the first two games in the series, it will offer the genuine conclusion that long-time fans have been waiting years to play.”

In Red Nun’s Legacy, players will explore a mysterious convent known as Cristo Morente, a location tied closely to the myth of the Red Nun. The story promises a psychological horror experience built around uncovering hidden truths within a world where reality may not always be what it seems.

Like previous games in the series, survival will rely heavily on stealth and awareness. Players must avoid or outmaneuver the game’s Stalkers, relentless enemies that roam the environment in search of their prey. While hiding and evasion remain central to the gameplay, the developers say there will be moments where players can fight back when necessary.

One of the new gameplay additions highlighted by Stormind is a hypnosis-based mechanic. This system allows players to interact with objects in the environment to uncover forgotten memories, reveal hidden passages, and gain a deeper understanding of the spaces they are exploring. The mechanic is designed to tie puzzle-solving more directly into the game’s narrative and world-building.

Exploration will also play a significant role. The convent setting is described as a large interconnected environment filled with secrets, key items, and puzzles that gradually unlock new areas. As players progress, they will uncover the forgotten history of Cristo Morente and the origins of the Red Nun legend.

Stormind describes the game as a love letter to classic third-person survival horror. That design philosophy has been a core part of the Remothered identity since the beginning, and it appears to remain a central focus for the new entry.

Red Nun’s Legacy is currently in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via storefronts including Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG.com. The game is available to wishlist now.

While there is no release date announced yet, the reveal of  Remothered: Red Nun’s Legacy shows a good sign that Stormind Games is not finished telling the story they originally went out to tell. For fans who have been waiting to see how the story concludes, Remothered: Red Nun’s Legacy aims to provide the long-awaited final chapter.
